OUR DISCOVERY

Who should get this

In our daily lives, wired earphones bring a lot of inconvenience. The moving cables not only affect the activities of our arms, but also hurt your ears if you accidently drop you phone or if you leave your car and forget your phone on the passenger seat so that the earbuds will pull your ears.

The most important thing is that after iPhone 7 cancelled the 3.5mm headphone jack, many new smartphones have gradually cancelled the headphone jacks as well, making wired headphones less useful than ever before. Bluetooth headphones can well solve these problems.

After iPhone 7 cancelled the 3.5mm headphone jack, many new smartphones have gradually cancelled the headphone jacks as well.

These earbuds suit people who want to wirelessly immerse in the music at the desk, on the plane or train, or in the car. These earbuds also need to provide clear call quality for both ends of the phones. Finally, they should have enough comfort and stability to meet the long-term wearing needs of daily use or doing sports.

If you desire to immerse in the music or reduce background noises totally and do not mind they will bother you if you are wearing glasses, you can check out our guide The Best Over-Ear Bluetooth Headphones.

How we picked

In order to find the best wireless Bluetooth earbud, we considered over 60 reputable manufacturers from Taobao, Amazon, AliExpress, souq.com, and JD, most of which are well-known audio manufacturers who focused on the quality of audio and microphone.

After researching the product lines and the consumer reviews, we found that most Bluetooth earbuds on the market have two kinds of design: Neckband Bluetooth earbuds like BeatsX and regular Bluetooth earbuds like Bose SoundSport Wireless Headphones. After researching and long-term using, we also discovered that these two kinds of design indeed meet two kinds of user demands.

BeatsX and Bose SoundSport Wireless Headphones

Neckband Bluetooth earbuds suit everyday usage more. Their neckband can provide decent stability and can conform to your neck comfortably. The neckband can fix the cable to avoid the cable gradually slip to the other side when you just need to wear a single earbud. Even if you need to take off the earbuds to chat with others, you can easily hang them on your chest for a long time.

Especially when you wear a shirt and want to hide the cable under your collar, regular Bluetooth earbuds usually come with shorter cables than neckband ones and will easily fall out because of the collide of the collars when you move your head while the neckband ones will not.

In this category, we abandoned the traditional fixed-neckband earphones. Although they provide terrific stability, they are too hard and too heavy to wear comfortably for a long time. What’s more, it is not portable at all.

Non-neckband collarless Bluetooth earbuds are more suitable for sports. What makes them different from neckband ones is that their cables are short and lightweight enough. If they bang against you head, fall out, or chafe, you will not want to use them. They are the ones that stay on and out of your way. They allow you to focus on your workout without burdening you.

Thus, ultimately, we chose these two kinds of Bluetooth earbuds according to different using demands and purchased up to 30 Bluetooth earbuds to test.

All our first time tested Bluetooth earbuds.

Updated on January 23, 2018. We tested another 14 Bluetooth earphones.

Updated on December 3, 2018. We tested another 11 Bluetooth earphones.

How we tested

According to the following criteria, we tested these Bluetooth earbuds.

Comfort

As usual, comfort is crucial to headphones. As for flexible and foldable neckband earphones, the neckband should be soft and lightweight enough to be comfortable while still ensuring the stability. In addition, the batteries need to be designed on both ends of the neckband to balance the weight and minimize its movement around the neck.

As for collarless design, there are two important factors to be secure. First of all, we think that shark-fin wing tips can make the earbuds stay in place. Then, a clip is needed for wearing stability especially when you are doing intense workouts. Otherwise, you have to endure the earbuds flopping to one side because of the imbalanced weight.

Left: Without the shirt clip, the cable would bounce and move around.
Right: With the clip attached, it keeps the cord in place securely.

As for in-ear earphones, earbuds should stay stable in your ears without adding any pressure to your ears. The fit is critical when you decide to purchase earbuds, especially when you need to wear them all-day long. The right size of ear tips become even more important if you need them to power you up when you do workouts. Since no one has exactly the same ear canal, no pair of ear tips is perfect for everyone. It is highly possible that a pair of ear tips is perfect for your ears while is miserable to others. Therefore, it is tougher for us to test this kind of Bluetooth earphones and reach a consensus than other kinds.

The right size of ear tips are very important.

In our tests, all our colleagues tried to find a pair of ear tips and wing tips to fit themselves. ( Fortunately, our colleagues have different sizes of ear canals, including large, small and medium.) We shake heads, run, and lifted weights with theses earphones to see if each pair of earbuds can stay firm in the ears. According to these two tests, we aim to find the right choice for most people, so if a pair of earphones feels good for all our colleagues, then we know it is the Mr. Right.

Left: large ear canal, Middle: medium ear canal, Right: small ear canal

Last but not least, we still advise you to try the earphones out before your purchasing them. Each pair of the earphones has different sizes of ear tips and wing tips. You can try them out until you find the perfect match.

Sound Quality

In-ear headphones are not over-ear headphones, so for this type of headphones, we did not ask them to do amazing things to recreating and illuminating every detail of the music. The in-ear Bluetooth earphones just need to convey a full sense of the mood and intent of the music. Thus, we test whether the earphones can provide clear music without too many flaws. That said, the bass of the earbuds cannot be too muddy to hear the vocals, or the highs are too piercing to turn up the volume.

In our tests, we choose our familiar songs to test out the bass, mids, and highs of the music. Only when we compare the differences of the familiar songs with different headphones, we can find the differences in timbre and clarity of earphones. After listening and recording the performance, we discussed and selected the ones that we all agreed to have fantastic sound quality.

We tested the sound quality of each earphones using the same song.

Call Quality

Call quality is also crucial to daily-use earphones, since it is possible that you need to frequently take calls when you are doing workouts, running or working.

In our test, we found that an iPhone can connect three Bluetooth earphones at once. Therefore, in order to test the call quality different earphones, we need to connect the Bluetooth earphones to the same iPhone at the same time and then call another phone. In this process, the colleagues on the other end of the phone did not know which pair of earphones were used. We recorded and compared through this blind test and filtered out the earphones with better call quality.

We recorded and compared through this blind test and filtered out the earphones with better call quality.

Battery Life

Battery life is another significant factor to be considered. That said, they should have at least 5-hour battery life, and 7-hour play time to satisfy us more. It allows the earphones to power you for almost a week if you exercise one hour a day with just a single charge.

To test battery life, we used the headphones to connect phones and then recorded how long they could last while playing music at 50% volume. Please note that battery can drain differently on different volumes.

We used the headphones to connect phones and then recorded how long they could last while playing music at 50% volume.

Bluetooth Performance

We also tested the Bluetooth performance including the connectivity range and the Bluetooth latency. The connectivity range was tested at the same place. Our colleagues measured the ranges by wearing them when listening to the music and walking away from the players until the music appeared intermittent. These distances were the normal connectivity ranges of the headsets. Bluetooth latency was very simple to test. We needed to check whether the video could perfectly match the sound without any delay. These seemed to be simple and basic, but a lot of headsets we tested could not accomplish this.

We measured the Bluetooth connectivity range of the earphones.

Waterproof

Bluetooth Earbuds should also resist to moisture and sweat. All our tested Bluetooth earbuds have at least IPX-4 waterproof rating, which means they can provide all-round and multi-angle water and splash resistance. In our daily use tests, they were also able to cope with the sweat when we did intense workout and the sudden heavy rain we encountered when we commuted. Although, these earphones are not designed for workouts, you never know when you will get caught in heavy rain on your commute.

At last, we considered the price point of 250 AED (almost 70 dollars) is proper for Bluetooth earbuds with all functions mentioned above. It is a reasonable price to buy a pair of Bluetooth earbuds that offers optimal quality and produced by reputable manufacturers.

Considering the above criteria, we checked the customer reviews on Taobao, JD, AliExpress, souq.com, and Amazon, learned the problems that would occur for long-term using and then tested whether the problems would truly occur and how to fix these problems. Finally, we took their prices and the test results into account to choose our final winners.

Our Pick for Sports

Our Pick: REMAX RB-S10

Our pick

REMAX RB-S10

The Best Bluetooth earbuds

They sound fantastic and stay comfortable and secure. The shirt clip avoids the moving cable to distract you during the most intense workouts.
US$ 24.99 from DIGSHOPAED 99.99 from DIGSHOP (UAE) Note: The price is based at the time of publishing.
Pros:
+Stable and snug fit+Cable clip adds extra stability during intense workout+Meticulous and clear sound quality+6-hour battery life
Cons:
-A bit short Bluetooth range
Remain comfortable and secure in your ears

You will desire the Bluetooth earbuds to stay in place when you are doing sports. This is something REMAX RB-S10 does. They are so comfort that you can focus on the workout. To be honest, it is impossible to design a pair of ear tips that can perfectly fit everyone, but the ear tips offered by REMAX RB-S10 are among the best we could find to fit most people. It comes with different sizes of ear tips. Each colleague can find a suitable ear tips to fit.

In addition, these earphones come with a shirt clip, so you can easily clip them on your collar when you are jogging or doing workouts and you will not be affected by the moving and shaking cable. However, most earphones on the market ignore this kind of fix design. The weights cannot be balanced, so the earphones are prone to slip to the heavier side while doing workouts. Furthermore, its shirt clip is more stable and comfortable than regular clips.

REMAX still remains great stability even you’re doing intense workouts.

Wow, they sound amazing!

The overall quality of the sound is meticulous and clear, and REMAX RB-S10 ranks high to this regard. The mids sound lovely, and especially for instruments, which rely on acoustic resonance, such as guitar, these earphones can show great details of the mids. Nevertheless, these earbuds also deliver a vibrant bass, which does not obscure the other frequencies, making the songs with solid bass sound more charming. They also offer clear but not piercing highs, but the highs cannot impress us.

Consequently, REMAX RB-S10 sounds than previous our pick, which means that it sounds best among what we have tested, and it is definitely comparable to high-end earbuds. In addition, you can customize the sound as you like through three predefined equalizer models-Bass Boost, Balance and Treble- when you press the two volume buttons together.

Unique braided cable

The cable of REMAX RB-S10 is braided, which is different from the cables of general headphones. At first, we thought that this design is weird, but after long-term using, we discovered that it is more durable than the regular cable and it did not deform and rotate as easily as the cables of general headphones. We often met this problem when we wore Bose SoundSport Wireless Headphones. The cable would bend inward and easily scratch your face, and you would need to spend a long time to reset it.

Left: Meibu K5’s cable would not deform and rotate as easily as those of general headphones.
Right: Bose’s cable would bend inward and easily scratch your face, so you need to spend a long time to reset it.

What’s more

Up to 6 hours of battery life allows them to power you for almost a day from a single full charge. In addition, the IPX5 waterproofing rating lets it effectively resist daily abuse, sweat, and moisture. Please remember to close the charging port when using.

REMAX survived from our water-proof test.

To our surprise, these earbuds have the nicest packaging in all of our tested products. You never expect headphones at such a price can offer this great package, which reflects that the brand REMAX treats consumers sincerely.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Its range of Bluetooth connectivity is not that broad. In our tests, the connectivity became unstable beyond 5 meters and did not do better than other tested Bluetooth earbuds. Nevertheless, we mainly considered sound quality and wearing comfort when we commented on in-ear wireless headphones. Selling for a quite low price, they did great on these two crucial factors. Considering that the farther Bluetooth connectivity was just a great bonus, we did not think it would great affect the general usage.

Anker Soundcore Spirit Pro

The best pal for sport lovers

Soundcore Spirit Pro can meet all your expectations for gym headphones. It can stay securely in most people’s ears, and the build quality and waterproof performance are incredible. Most importantly, it provides impressive sound quality.
US$ 44.99 from DIGSHOPAED 168.99 from DIGSHOP (UAE) Note: The price is based at the time of publishing.
Pros:
+Stable and snug fit+Impressive sound quality+Excellent build quality and waterproof performance+10-hour battery life
Cons:
-It still uses a Micro-USB port.

Everybody knows that Anker has always provided high-quality products at affordable prices, which makes it a reputable charging accessory brand. In recent years, Anker has gradually experimented with different industries, of which the audio industry is the most active – a number of Bluetooth headphones and Bluetooth speakers have been launched.

In December 3, 2018’s update, it was our first time to meet Anker’s Bluetooth headphones. And what made us surprised is that this Anker Soundcore Spirit Pro meets all our expectations to a pair of gym headphones, including the cozy fit, solid build quality, excellent waterproof performance, and the impressive sound quality.

Anker Soundcore Spirit Pro meets all our expectations to a pair of gym headphones.

Secure fit

Anker Soundcore Spirit Pro comes with three shark fins and four pairs of silicone ear tips, all in different sizes. Once you choose the most suitable ear accessories, you can wear the headphones securely. When I put on Spirit Pro, I barely felt nothing in ears. And its included cord clip or shirt clip ensures the headphones’ security during intense sports, which is the reason I’d love to use it working out every night.

Anker Soundcore Spirit Pro comes with three shark fins, four pairs of silicone ear tips, one cord clip and one shirt clip.

It’s worth noting that, Spirit Pro is very thoughtful as it includes a cord clip and a shirt clip for consumers options. You can use one of them based on your daily need, so that your workout experiences can be greatly improved. We didn’t notice this tiny detail at first because most headphones we tested usually ignore it — they don’t come with these two clips at all. We can tell that product managers in Anker really go out of their way to improve user experience while designing products, which really impressed us.

Incredible IP68 water proofing

REMAX also features great wearing comfort. Thus, what makes Spirit Pro our upgrade pick is its crazy IP68 waterproof rating, which means it can fight against any rain and sweat. IP68 is already the highest level for general Bluetooth headphones.

Although the design of the entire headphones looks very solid, to be honest, when I first got them, I was very doubtful about its waterproof ability. Typically, sports headphones come with a plug to cover on the USB port to stop water entering. But Spirit Pro’s USB port is completely exposed.

Well, not letting us down, the headphones survived from our waterproof test, and my concerns were totally unnecessary. So, now, I will wash them directly with water after each workout. Yep, they can handle it very well. That means, when it rains heavily or when you are sweating, you can immerse yourself in your music world wearing them.

Thanks to Spirit Pro’s incredible waterproof protection, it does not require a cover for its charging port.

Comparable sound quality to Bose SoundSport Wireless?

We had relatively high expectation for Anker Spirit Pro due to its higher price. And in fact, it doesn’t let us down. For the sound quality, we have nothing to complain, as it features rich and full sounds and is able to deliver more details of music. The real strength that makes it outweigh other competitors is its strong and powerful bass, especially when you switch it to the bass-powerful workout mode. When I wear it going into a noisy gym, it can make me forget all the annoying issues and allows me to enjoy the music and sweat.

When compared with Bose SoundSport Wireless Headphones, these earbuds do not perform the details as well as Bose SoundSport Wireless Headphones, especially when you’re listening to some orchestral music. Most of the time, however, we do not notice too many differences. Frankly, I will not pay more than double the price of Anker for a little more music details of Bose SoundSport Wireless. What’s more, Anker performs even better than Bose in other features.

Anker Soundcore Pro (Left) and Bose SoundSport Wireless (Right)

Long battery life

According to Anker Spirit Pro’s introduction, it can offer up to 10 hours of battery time. I haven’t done a test on how long it can actually last, but during my real-world use, it can last that long. When it’s fully charged, the battery does satisfy my one-week intense usage (I use it commuting every day and during one-hour working out every night).

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It is a pity that Spirit Pro still uses a Micro-USB charging port. In our opinion, it just needs to take one more step to become perfect workout Bluetooth headphones — a USB-C charging port. This is not a flaw, but Anker, a company well known for its charging accessories, is not doing enough in its field. But then again, Spirit Pro can provide up to 10 hours of battery life. With that in mind, we have nothing more to complain about.

It is a pity that Spirit Pro still uses a Micro-USB charging port.

QCY QY19

The best bargain in-ear earbuds

This comfortable and inexpensive pair offers decent sound. The shirt clip helps secure the cable, allowing to immerse in the music without noticing or constraining by the earphones.
US$ 19.99 from DIGSHOPAED 64.99 from DIGSHOP (UAE) Note: The price is based at the time of publishing.
Pros:
+Stable and cozy fit+Cable clip adds extra stability during intense workout+Clear sound quality+Wallet friendly
Cons:
-Only 5-hour battery life

If you do not wish to spend too much on Bluetooth earbuds, QCY QY19 will be the best choice for you. It is the most comfortable earbuds we have tested in budget pick section. These earbuds also come with a shirt clip so that they will not shake or move when you are jogging or doing intense workouts. They do not sound as good as our pick, but they sound better than other earphones at this price point.

Cozy fit

QCY QY19 comes with 5 sizes of ear tips and 3 sizes of rubber stabilizing wing tips, which are enough for all our colleagues to get a secure fit. In this price range, ear tips of many headphones are not soft enough and do not come with stabilizing wing tips, and you definitely do not want to put them in your ears.

Accessories of QCY QY19

Plus, QCY QY19 has an included cable clip. When you’re doing intense workouts, the cable won’t dangle, which is rare to see in this price range of headphones. To our surprise, the ear tips and ear wings of QCY QY19 are so comfortable and secure, and they offer more comfort and stability than wireless earbuds even with higher price points.

Decent sound quality

According to our test, QCY QY19 sounds good. There is a bit of extra intensity in the highs so that “s” sounds slightly whistling, but the effect is not offensive. Our colleagues are fine with the overall sound quality. However, we find that the extra bass makes the sound a little uncomfortable. In terms of sound quality, these earbuds cannot catch up with REMAX RB-S10, but they sound not bad. They can still convey a full sense of the mood and the intent of the music, allowing me to immerse in the music.

It’s not perfect, but excellent enough.

In addition, these earbuds have only five hours of battery life, but it is hard to find other earbuds in this price range that can offer better comfort and sound quality. Moreover, calls are crisp and clear to you and your caller. Thus, QCY QY19 may not be perfect, but it depends on your demands. Although it has flaws, it is one of the best Bluetooth earphones that you can get in this price range.

Excellent sound and all-day comfort

They offer great sound and comfortable neckband to meet the daily-use demand. The neckband is also flexible enough to be organized easily.
US$ 29.99 from DIGSHOPAED 149.99 from DIGSHOP (UAE) Note: The price is based at the time of publishing.
Pros:
+Stable and snug fit+Soft silicone neckband+Impressive sound quality +Clear call quality
Cons:
-Only 6.5-hour of battery life

If you need to wear headphones in the office or at home, QCY L1  will be your best choice. As far as we considered, the neckband design suits daily using most, since this design allows you to take off the earbuds and hang them on the chest so that you can chat with others and then put them on to enjoy the music anytime.

Wearing QCY L1 in the office.

You’ll probably forget they’re in your ears.

When it comes to long-time wearing, comfort is everything. What QCY L1 does better than our previous pick is that, its neckband is made of soft silicone material. It fits snugly around your neck without feeling any pressure, letting you forget its existence.

Compared with headphones with short cables, QCY L1 is extremely suitable for daily use, since its neckband can fix the cable to avoid the cable gradually slip to the other side when you need to chat with others and just need to wear a single earbud. Even if you need to take off both the earbuds, you can easily hang them on your chest for a long time.

Neckband design allows you to take off the earphones anytime.

Especially when you wear a shirt and want to hide the cable under your collar, regular Bluetooth earbuds usually come with shorter cables than neckband ones and will easily fall out because of the collide of the cables when you move your head while the neckband ones will not.

Especially when you wear a shirt and want to hide the cable under your collar, regular Bluetooth earbuds usually come with shorter cables than neckband ones and will easily fall out.

Although we believe that non-neckband headphones are more suitable for strenuous workout, QCY L1 performed not bad when we did workouts. The neckband was lightweight and comfortable enough to let us forget its existence. In addition, they also come with soft, comfortable wingtips but not shark-fin tips. At first, we worried about whether they can offer enough stability. After testing, we found out they could stay on your ears securely without adding any pressure. If you do not need to wear them for intense workouts frequently, they can absolutely meet your daily-use demands.

Impressive sound quality

After testing, we found out QCY L1 sounded fantastic. It would fill my world with sparkling shimmers and glitters but still allowed me to immerse in the music. The sound clarity is our most satisfied part, as we don’t hear any harsh highs or muddy lows, basically. And for the highs, it also has clear and crystal sounds.Of course, it does not perform that great on the overall sound quality, but in this price range, its sound quality is more excellent than other competitors. Considering that the price of QCY L1 is only one-tenth that of BeatsX, I think we already have enough.

A detail that’s easy to be ignored

When testing the durability, we find out that the design and the quality of the neckband are important, since we need to coil it up and put it in a pocketable pouch when not wearing them. To this regard, QCY L1 can be comparable to BeatsX and our upgrade pick OnePlus Bullets, because its neckband is soft and comfortable enough while ensuring great durability.

However, many other earphones cannot balance the durability and the comfort. The joint parts of some earphones, like Coolpad K8, broke up when we did the bending tests. For QCY L1, we already used it for a month, and it still works well.

How does it compare with the popular Meizu EP52?

Meizu EP52 had always been considered the best among neckband earbud in this price range, as it could provide a softer neckband and the-same-excellent sound quality, until we found QCY L1. In the tests of call quality and noise reduction capacity, QCY L1 performed better than Meizu EP52. Considering that people use such headphones to make calls in everyday use, QCY L1’s advantages in call quality and noise canceling make it outweigh other competitors.

In addition, QCY L1 delivers at least 7.5 hours of playback. After testing, we found that the QCY L1 could deliver super-long battery life, even reaching up to 11 hours. We think QCY L1 is the best neckband earbuds we can find in such an aggressive price.

MEIZU EP52 (Left) and QCY L1 (Right)

Flaws but not dealbreakers

For such neckband earbuds that you need to use every day, 7 hours of battery life is our ideal time. QCY L1 is only half an hour away from perfection. But, in this price range, it’s already the best neckband earbuds we could find. With that in mind, 30 minutes is a compromise that we can accept.

Upgrade Pick: OnePlus Bullets Wireless

Upgrade Pick

OnePlus Bullets Wireless

Almost perfect neckband earbuds

OnePlus Bullets Wireless comes with a softer neckband, so it’s lighter and more comfortable. Its sound details are richer, and the sound quality is even close to Beats X.
US$ 59.99 from DIGSHOPAED 249.99 from DIGSHOP (UAE) Note: The price is based at the time of publishing.
Pros:
+Stable and snug fit+Soft neckband, easily organize+Sound quality close to Beats X+Fast USB-C charging
Cons:
-Slightly expensive

We have been trying to find an upgraded pick relative to our pick. But among the headphones we tested before, besides the higher prices than our pick, they actually performed worse than our pick in other features. This made us very disappointed. Until we knew that OnePlus Bullets Wireless was released, we immediately bought it back to test and expected it to perform well. Luckily, OnePlus Bullets Wireless didn’t let us down.

OnePlus is one of the few Chinese mobile phone manufacturers that has gained great success in overseas markets. Its yearly flagship mobile phone is the best among the products in the same price range. And one of the key factors of OnePlus’s success is that it can design really good products and sell them at fairly reasonable prices. Obviously, OnePlus Bullets Wireless is one of the members.

Softer neckband

The neckband of OnePlus Bullets Wireless is much softer and lighter. Whether you put it on or take it off, it gives you better experiences. More importantly, the entire neckband is wrapped with a layer of silicone, which makes it really skin friendly — your neck will feel more comfortable in contact with the neckband.

What’s more, it comes with varying sizes of ear tips and ear wings, allowing our colleagues to find their suitable accessories for their ear canals easily. Thus, I can’t imagine that there would be someone who doesn’t fit these headphones.

I used to wear my Bose QC35 in the office, and I was addicted to its excellent noise reduction performance and comfortable fit. However, even over-ear headphones like QC35 are as cozy as hell, it’s inevitable to feel sultry after wearing them for a long time, let alone use them on a hot summer day.

But, OnePlus is special. Even if I wear it for long hours, my ears have nothing to complain about. Thus, I prefer to use OnePlus in a quiet place (such as my office) while going back to Bose only in a noisy environment (I had no choice).

Even if I wear OnePlus Bullets Wireless for long hours, my ears have nothing to complain about.

Comparable sound quality to Beats X?

If you have higher requirements to headphones’ sound quality, One Plus Bullets Wireless can do a better job for you in providing fascinating and exciting sounds. No kidding. Its sound quality is close enough to Beats X and even better in other ways. When we listen to some exciting rock music, OnePlus can greatly combine the instrument sounds and singers’ roaring sounds.

Undeniably, Beats X does an astonishing job on rock or heavy-bass songs. It is also because that Beats X emphasizes so much on bass so that sometimes we feel like being trapped in a room when listening to sopranos, while OnePlus let you feel like being on a grand plateau to hear an ethereal sound. At this point, I think OnePlus surprisingly does better. More importantly, OnePlus is only half the price of Beats X.

Awesome USB-C fast charging

In a par with most wireless headphones, OnePlus wins in the USB-C charging port and fast-enough charging speed. OnePlus official stated that using the headphones with their Dash Charger, you can get a five-hour long music time after charging only five minutes. Also, you’ll get up to 8 hours of battery life from a single full charge.

Regardless of whether its charging speed can be that fast (after our tests, it can indeed achieve almost 5 hours listening time), featuring the USB-C port is just attractive enough. Today, USB-C is becoming mainstream. Headphones that are charged with a Micro-USB port will become our burden in many cases. When you bring them to travel, you always have to take that useless Micro-USB cable with you. But, with OnePlus, you can charge it with a USB-C cable.

A very practical function

Now, most headphones feature a magnetic function to prevent dangling when you take them off. For OnePlus, besides the magnetic setting, it can also control your music by the magnetic control feature. When you clip the two earbuds together, the music stops immediately. And when you need to play music again, just separate them. This is really a simple but effective little function.

It can control your music by the magnetic control feature.

What’s more…

What I want to say at last is that, I really like its included headphones pouch. The pouch not only has a minimalist and stylish design, but also comes with pleasing functions. Thanks to its soft silicone material, the pouch feels great to the touch. In addition, there is a magnetic setting at the opening, which allows you to open or close it easily. What an amazing brand! It designs its products with heart, even an included little pouch.

Budget Pick: Caledecott BT-KDK05

Budget Pick

Caledecott BT-KDK05

You can get the best at this price point.

Caledecott is neckband earbuds that can offer cozy fit and decent sound quality at this price point, which is quite rare. And its 11-hour play time allows you to enjoy music as long as you want.
US$ 19.99 from DIGSHOPAED 74.99 from DIGSHOP (UAE) Note: The price is based at the time of publishing.
Pros:
+Stable and snug fit+Soft neckband, easily organize+Clear call quality+Clear call quality
Cons:
-The neckband is a bit harder than the two picks above.

Before we found QCY L1, Caledecott BT-KDK05 was topping our pick. We barely found any flaws in it except the not-soft-enough neckband. It can meet all our requirements of neckband earbuds, including cozy fit, decent sound quality and ultra-long battery time. We used it to make phone calls, and the calls sounded great as well. People at each end of the phone both enjoyed the talk. For people who don’t want to spend much money on a pair of Bluetooth headphones, Caledecott is your best choice in this price range.

Its sound quality surprised us.

Caledecott performs quite excellent in sound quality, and that’s one of the key reasons it attracts us. Especially when such great headphones in our pick and upgraded pick that weren’t released before, most earphones in this price range had unbearable sound quality. Many models we tested were even not as good as Caledecott, and they were much more expensive.

Caledecott is bass-focused headphones, so you can hear strong drums and bass while listening to songs with heavy-bass effect. But it doesn’t produce terrible roaring sounds that cheap headphones have. Even if the mids and highs are not what Caledecott good at, it can reach 7/10. There is no obvious break and sounds that make you feel uncomfortable. Of course, limited by its cost, the immersion and clarity are not as good as our pick.

You would love to wear it around your neck.

Compared with the two picks above, its neckband is not wrapped by soft silicone material, which we consider the biggest compromise of Caledecott. However, the neckband is not that hard-kind rubber, and it’s actually quite flexible. You can still fold it and organize it. Most importantly, it’s lightweight, which makes it a pleasure to wear it around your neck. Also, in our long-term testing, none of our colleagues complained about it.

It’s lightweight, which makes it a pleasure to wear it around your neck.

In addition, it offers soft and suitable wingtips, instead of some normal shark fins. We’ve seen wingtips design in Beats X. After our testing, such design can indeed make the headphones stay in your ears stably without putting tension on ears. With that said, the wear comfort is not perfect though, we think it can at least reach 8 out of 10.

Long battery life

Caledecott claims that it comes with 7.5 hours of music time, but, actually, it can provide up to 11 hours based on our testing, which really surprised us. Generally, small manufacturers would falsify the parameter of their products just to attract more customers. However, Caledecott doesn’t do this, and it even has better performance than the numbers on the package. Thus, it can easily handle your high-intensity use in the day.

Products to avoid

In our tests, we weeded out fixed-neckband Bluetooth earbuds. Although they offer better stability, they are too hard and too heavy. They just fell like a bulky collar on your neck. It is a serious problem of wearing comfort. This kind of neckband is too hard to be coiled up to put into your pocket or bag. This design does not add any advanced functions but just improve the battery life.

However, the flexible neckband design we recommend smartly puts the battery on both ends of the neckband to ensure both the long battery life and the great wearing comfort. Thus, when purchasing Bluetooth earbuds, the fixed-neckband earbuds should not be your choice.

Fixed-neckband Bluetooth earbuds are too hard to be coiled up to put into your pocket or bag.

What’s more, although some earbuds could offer soft neckband, they cannot balance the durability and the comfort. The joint parts of some earphones, like Coolpad K8, broke up when we did the bending tests. Thus, we should pay attention to the material and the craftmanship of the neckbands. We advise you to check the reviews of Bluetooth earbuds on different review websites or buy headphones which are best-selling or have great customer reviews.

What to look forward to

Since Apple introduced AirPods, many headphone brands have launched a lot of true wireless Bluetooth headphones, such as B&O E8, Bose SoundSport Free, Sony WF-1000X, Jabra Elite 65t, etc. They are the final form of wireless Bluetooth earbuds, allowing users to truly get rid of the constrain of the cables. This well solves the problem that Apple EarPods has always been colored by how loosely they sat in my ear. However, because the technology of true wireless earbuds has not matured, these earbuds will appear more or less problems such as not good microphone, Bluetooth latency, short battery life and so on.

Therefore, we are learning, observing and understanding the products on the market to find out whether they are worth buying now. We plan to test them soon to see whether they exist some flaws and whether we can tolerate these flaws in actual usage. In the end, we look forward to finding out affordable true wireless earbuds with decent overall performance.

About IPX Waterproof Rating

IPX is the term we often see on the ads of some headsets, so what exactly do they represent? What does it mean for my Bluetooth headphones? IPX is an international waterproof rating standard. It has been used to rate the degree of protection against water of products for outdoors, diving, and more. There are nine waterproof ratings from IPX-0 to IPX-8. The higher the level, the stronger the waterproof ability.

Generally, the waterproof ratings of the Bluetooth headphones are IPX-4 or IPX-5, which are able to cope with the water that we sweat during intense sports and the sudden heavy rain that we may encounter when we go to work. However, if you need Bluetooth earbuds that can be used while swimming, then they need to reach the IPX8 waterproof rating, which allows you to soak in the clean water (non-salt water) about 1.5 feet deep for 30 minutes. It is worth noting that no matter what level of waterproof rating the equipment is used, please make sure that your equipment closes all protective covers such as Micro-USB port, SIM card slot, and other card slots before use. Please wait until these interfaces are completely dry before using them again. If you want to know more about IPX, you can check Sony’s information.

The Rivalry

For Sport

Bose SoundSport Wireless Headphones: These earbuds sounds fantastic, which continues the fabulous Bose sound quality. They provide powerful bass and more details of highs. The sound is more clear and natural. However, the earbuds are too big. Although they are comfortable to wear, it looks awkward when wearing them. The sound qualities of our upgrade pick are good enough. Unless you desire endless details to be heard, we do not recommend you spend that much money on them.

Huawei xSport: As previous our pick for non-neckband option, Huawei xSport ingeniously balances the weight on both sides to solve the problem that the non-neckband headphones are prone to slip to the heavier side while doing workouts. However, we think these earbuds are too heavy, and they will shake slightly when doing intense workout. They sound decent and balanced, but when compared with our pick, the powerful heavy bass makes the mids and highs sound less clear and a little blurry.

Jaybird X2: These earbuds sell pretty well on the Amazon, but the rating is not high. Although they offer a decent sound quality, their wing tips are too large to fit most people.

Skullcandy Ink’d Wireless: The sound quality is excellent. However, as we mentioned before, comfort is everything. Without stabilizing wing tips, these earbuds use the in-ear design to keep secure. You will feel a little pressure if you wear them for a long time.

Plantronics BackBeat Fit 2: The ear-hook design can keep the earbuds secure, but they are not easy and comfortable to wear. Thus, we abandoned the ear-hook design.

JBL T110 BT: These earbuds continue our disappointment with JBL’s low-end products. Except for their cool sound, we do not like them at all.

Edifier W290BT: These earbuds come with a fantastic design that the earbuds can stay in place without a shark-fin design. However, they do not sound as great as our pick. What’s more, these earbuds cannot connect two devices at the same time while they state they can.

Mifo I8: Without stabilizing ear wings, these earbuds cannot wear comfortably for a long time, though they deliver a decent sound quality.

Huawei AM60: Huawei xSport is the upgraded version of Huawei AM60. The weight of these earbuds is not balanced, and they do not come with a shirt clip. Thus, they cannot stay in space when doing intense workouts.

Xiaomi Bluetooth Headphones Mini: Not all products from Xiaomi are good. The ear hooks make these earphones uneasy and uncomfortable to wear.

Xiaomi Bluetooth Headphones Youth: The way of wearing these headphones is clearly more comfortable and convenient than its Mini version, which is a positive improvement. However, the sound quality is mediocre. And it doesn’t have a magnetic setting on the back, which is not as convenient as our pick when you use it.

QCY QY12: The earbuds are too big to wear comfortably. You will feel pressure and hurt if you wear for a long time. In addition, people with small ear canals cannot even put them on.

Taotronics BH16: The ear tips and ear wings are a little hard. If you just wear them for a short time, they will not annoy you. However, in our test, we felt uncomfortable when we wore them for more than an hour.

Taotronics BH15: The rectangular design of the earbuds makes these earphones too big to wear comfortably. They do not come with a clip for stability, too.

Edifier W280BT: It is comfortable to wear them. However, they do not come with a clip, so these earbuds will slip to the heavier side when doing intense workout, making them annoying.

Kugou M1: They are comfortable to wear. These earbuds are so sweet since they come with 2 shirt clips. However, the sound quality falls behind our pick a lot.

Picun H6: Theses earphones sound so terrible. The bass is blurry and muddy, and you cannot hear vocals at all.

Picun H2: The sound quality is even worse than H6, which is a common problem in such cheap headphones. They make terrible sounds.

Shinco TY112: The wearing experience is a nightmare. The earphones are so big (the biggest we tested) that you don’t want to insert them in your ears at all.

Havit i39: This economical product makes it appealing, but you will get what you pay for. We cannot reduce the standard of wearing comfort because of its low price. In addition, they do not come with stabilizing ear wings.

Amoi A1:  These earbuds look so wield, and we seldom see this kind of design on Bluetooth earbuds. Moreover, they are uncomfortable to wear.

For Everyday Use

BeatsX: Undoubtedly, as a benchmark product in this category, the neckband of BeatsX is comfortable enough, and the sound quality is worth its price. In our tests, BeatsX did an astonishing job on rock or heavy-bass songs, and the BeatsX performed better on the overall sound. However, it was also because that BeatsX emphasized so much on bass so that we felt like being trapped in a room when listening to sopranos, while Oneplus let you feel like being on a grand plateau to hear an ethereal sound. If you have enough budget, and you really care about Bluetooth connection experience (if your devices are all iOS), BeatsX is still worth your buy. Otherwise, we will vote for Oneplus.

Meizu EP52: As previous our pick for flexible and portable neckband option, the neckband of these earbuds provides the highest wearing comfort, and the skin-friendly material delivers delicate touch feeling. The mids and highs sound a little blurry, and they lost a lot of details of the music. Thus, QCY L1 is a better choice if you care a lot about sound quality because it delivers powerful bass and decent mids, and it provides secure and comfortable fit with only a fifth price of Meizu EP52.

Coolpad K8: These earbuds offer great sound quality and secure fit. Unfortunately, in the durability test, the joints of the neckband and the cable broke up after multiple bends, so we had to abandon it.

Joyroom Y1: These earbuds look like BeatsX as well. However, they sound horrible, and the highs totally crack.

KESSKESS K8: These earbuds have a similar design as BeatsX. However, they sound terrible, and the highs are a little muddy.

Updated Log

Updated: January 23, 2018

We tested another 14 Bluetooth earphones, and we found out Caledecott BT-KDK05 can deliver better sound and call quality, and it is cheaper than Meizu EP52. Thus, we choose Caledecott BT-KDK05 as new Our Pick for Everyday Use. And, we also add the short reviews of other 11 products that failed to be our picks below.

In this update, we bought 14 products back for testing.

For Sport

Mifo U2: The earbuds are too big to fit most people, and they are not so comfortable to wear. It looks wield when wearing them.

Pioneer SEC-E322BT: These earbuds are expensive but fail to surprise us. They’re neither quite comfortable to wear nor better in sound quality.

Pioneer SEC-E511BT: These earbuds are the upgraded version of Pioneer SEC-E322BT while adding magnetic design, greater sound quality, and extra comfort. When compared to our pick, the highs are lacking, and the muffled bass and mids cannot save the overall sound quality.

MEIBU K5: It looks very similar to our pick which is also made of special braided thread. We once doubted they were the same headphones. Undeniably, K5 sound quality is quite great, but the Bluetooth connection range is not the case, based on our testing. If a phone is five meters away from K5, the connection would be unstable.

MEIBU K4: The sound quality and overall performance of Meibu K4 and Meibu K5 do not have significant difference. However, they use varying materials on the cable and it is normal nylon in K4. Unfortunately, we broke the cable of K4 in our test. So, that proves that braided cable is indeed more durable than normal wires. No wonder REMAX RB-S10 and K5 use the braided cables.

For Everyday Use

Bluedio T:  We expected this Bluedio headphones for a long time. We booked them in December 2017, but they didn’t arrive until January 18, 2018. However, they did not surprise us just like their over-ear headphones. Without a shark-fin design, these earbuds cannot comfortably fit most people. After turning on the ANC noise-cancelling model, the sound quality has been greatly affected, and they produce some squeaky noises. What’s more, we do not feel obvious noise-cancelling effect.

MOOLSUN s29: The price is reasonable, and they are comfortable to wear. However, the highs sound harsh and the bass sounds muddy and blurry.

WOPOW bt12: The remote and the battery are too large to wear comfortably. You will feel pressure if you wear for a long time.

E-3LUE EBT970: These earbuds sound a little bit too loud. In our tests, the drum sounds harsh and piercing, and the Bass sounds dull and muffled.

Maxchange X6: The heavy bass sounds muddy and blurry while muffling mids and highs.

Macaw TW-80: With okay sound quality and a expensive price, these earphones do not have any sparkling features to attract us at all.

Taku T5: The muddy bass and muffled mids seems to ruin the whole music, so we cannot select T5 as our pick.

B-X6: We all do not like how these earphones sound. The bass beats too hard.

Updated: December 3, 2018

In this update, we tested 11 newly-released headphones. The well-known hardware manufacturers, Anker and OnePlus, launched two fresh Bluetooth headphones that surprised us. Thus, we’re delighted to find two upgrade picks — Anker Soundcore Spirti Pro and OnePlus Bullets Wireless. Also, QCY L1 replaced Caledecott BT-KDK05 and becomes our pick for Everyday Use relying on its better sound quality and softer neckband.

In this update, we bought 10 products back for testing.

For Sport

Anker Soundcore Spirit X: As we mentioned above, it’s our first time to meet Anker’s headphones. Thus, we first planned to buy all four released models back to test. However, it is a clip-on type, and we think it is inconvenient to wear and take it off along with uncomfortable wearing. Thus, we already ruled it out in the first round of selection.

Anker Soundcore Spirit: Anker Soundcore Spirit Pro is an upgrade version of Anker Soundcore Spirit, and it’s only one dollar higher than the latter. Spirit features Bluetooth 5.0, while Spirit Pro uses the legacy of Bluetooth 4.2. But in our real-world usage, there is no major difference between the Bluetooth performance. And Spirit Pro is way better than Spirit in sound quality, not to mention the IP68 Spirit Pro has while Spirit only comes with IPX7. From all these improved functions, we can see that Anker is really designing products with efforts and giving users a significant upgrade experience in each time of upgrade.

Anker Slim+: Anker Slim+ is Anker’s earlier product. Its price is in the middle of our pick and upgrade pick. However, compared with our pick, it doesn’t perform better in every way. And MEIBU even performs better than it in sound quality. Therefore, we still choose the more cost-effective REMAX as our pick.

Taotronics BH-07: Taotronics’ headphones sell great on Amazon, but we’re not satisfied with the few models we tested. The same goes for this BT-07. Its sound quality is mediocre, and it’s not comparable to our pick. Plus, it does not have a cable clip to secure the cable.

Xiaomi Young Sport Bluetooth Headphones: This model is not quite comfortable to wear. First, the main part of the entire earbud is too large, so you will feel something extra in your ears. Second, it does not have any small accessories to secure the cable, which makes the headphone cord wobble significantly during intense workouts.

Netease X3 Plus: In our The Best Affordable Wireless Headset post, we recommended Netease headphones. Thus, we still have pretty high expectations for its products. Surprisingly, X3 is very comfortable, which benefits from its light weight, and is the lightest gym headphones we tested. However, it doesn’t include a cable clip to secure the headphones cord, which still affects us during workouts. Plus, it sells for a higher price than our pick. So, we think it’s not the best headphones that worth our recommendation.

Netease X3: X3 Plus is X3’s upgraded version, so it performs better than X3 in a few ways. X3 is not as comfortable as X3 Plus to wear, and its sound quality has obvious differences relative to X3 Plus. What’s more, it also doesn’t have a cable clip to secure the headphones cord.

For Everyday Use

SCOLIB B6: These are neck-mounted style headphones that look good, but the sound quality fails us. They sound dull, just like a horn which is covered.
