Our Discovery

Who should buy this

Keeping hands clean is a minor routine in our daily life, but it’s also quite easy to be ignored. There are zillions of germs living around you. They are everywhere and can be spread by a variety of ways. Therefore, washing hands frequently is an important habit we can form to minimize the spread of germs, helping you stay away from diseases.

Have you realized that when you use a standard soap bar to clean your hands, the hand dirt will contaminate the soap bar? And do you know the germs and bacteria will leave on it and are likely to grow more on the moist soap bar and spread to the next user?

Don’t panic. We have a good solution for you — an automatic soap dispenser, which is a hygiene alternative to standard hand sanitizers and soap bars. With this magical machine, you don’t need to take the soap bar with your hands full of germs, minimizing the growth and residue of bacteria. The multi-functional soap dispenser uses infrared sensing technology to dispense a certain amount of soap. Just put your hand under the motion sensor, the unit will squirt foaming soap for your use.

Automatic sensing

With the technology going far, automatic soap dispensers are gaining more fans. You might already notice them in restaurants or hotels. But now, more people tend to get their own to use in the house. The touchless way makes it more hygienic. Moreover, this type of dispensers will occupy children’s attention and make them wash their hands more frequently. As you know, kids are more likely to be attacked by germs and bacteria.

For some automatic soap dispensers, you can refill them with any liquid, including the brand hand soap you’re used to, the dish soap, or even shampoo and shower gel. That means you can not only use them near a sink, but also in a kitchen, bathroom or other wash areas based on your needs.

How we picked

A decent automatic soap dispenser can do a great job in keeping those bacteria and germs at bay. Unfortunately, some dispensers might come with an unreasonable design, turning this easy hand-washing issue complicated. For instance, when you’re washing hands, it’s inevitable that water will splash onto the unit, resulting in the damaged circuit board if the dispenser is not waterproof. Hence, we picked 13 models with different designs and brands on every major e-commerce sites, and put them to the test based on the following criteria:

The automatic soap dispensers we tested.

Infrared sensor and its sensitivity

Now, most automatic soap dispensers on the market use infrared sensing technology which offers the touchless, easy, and more hygienic operation for you. Additionally, the sensing function can only be activated when you need it. Infrared sensing is the soul of automatic hand washers. A qualified dispenser should have a responsive motion detector which should be fast-acting when you put your hand below it and dispense the soap you need on time.

Anti-leakage

Picture this, when you arrive home after a day of work, you want to get your hands clean but the sink is full of foam. At that moment, I’m sure this cleaning hack will leave you painful. Thus, a decent dispenser should ensure stable long-term use, rather than squirt the soap all over the place randomly after a period of time.

Water resistance

In general, people will put the soap dispenser near a sink to use, and that unavoidably leads to water splashes onto the machine, more or less. So, an excellent soap dispenser should perform good enough in water resistance so as to protect the circuit board and the batteries from damage because of the splashes.

Battery slot

Like we mentioned above, splash problem is inescapable. Hence, aside from the waterproof feature, the battery slot is also a crucial factor affecting the battery life. If the battery slot is at the bottom of the soap dispenser, it’s more likely to soak in water and become broken than that on top or at back. In addition, for the bottom battery slot type, you need to slant the dispenser when replacing the batteries or they will fall out.

Durability

Whatever product you invest, the quality is always the main point to consider. For some badly-made soap dispensers, damaged circuit board or failure sensing function will occur after a period time of use. Those are the products you should avoid to purchase.

Problems that are deserved to be noticed

There are also some problems that are deserved to be noticed. For some dispensers that require self-refill, if they come with a wide opening that allows you to add liquid soap easily, then this design is competent.

For some dispensers with exclusive liquid soap (not alternative), buying a new bottle is more costly than buying a random hand wash in the supermarket when you need to get a refill. With that said, if the included liquid soap comes with large amount, it can save you a bit of money.

Touchless soap dispensers can improve your living quality and also reduce the chance of spreading germs and cross infection. Prices of automatic soap dispensers go from low to high. While we’re picking great products for you, we also hope to spot some with a reasonable price.

How we tested

After unboxing 13 soap dispensers, we tried to figure out how to assemble. For some units with an included soap container, it’s difficult to put them together. In addition, some dispensers and the container are separated. They’re connected by just a buckle. However, the connection is a bit loose and cannot be closed at all. When you take up the dispenser, the liquid flask will drop and the soap will spill out.

We put each dispenser in the same spot and kept moving our hand under the sensor to test the auto-sensing range. Then we recorded the responsive time. We would also continue to use each unit for multiple times to fact-check their reliability.

Typically, a dispenser is used near the faucet of a sink in a bathroom or kitchen, which is almost at your fingerprints. So, it’s inevitable to be splashed by water. To test the water-proof ability, we simulated two scenarios including water splashes and when there are loads of water on the sink.

Excellent waterproof ability ensures long-time usage.

Moreover, if the battery slot is designed on top or at back of the dispenser, it can keep the batteries or circuit board from wet and damage. In the process of testing those dispensers with battery slot at the bottom, the batteries once dropped out when we changed them and the hand soap flowed out when we slanted the hand washer.

The batteries fall out when yo’re changing.

What we found

Choosing a right automatic soap dispenser is a bit challenging. We get it. Through our long-term testing and real-world usage, we’ve included the following tips throughout that might just help you choose an ideal soap dispenser.

First, you need to confirm the use scenario before purchasing. There are two types of soap dispensers available on the market: the first type comes with exclusive liquid soap, which you cannot replace it with other soap, and the second one allows you to refill any liquid soap you need.

If you just want to use the dispenser next to a sink, then the first type is your choice. Since it not only can let you wash your hands in an easy and decent way but is also quite economical.

If you prefer to add your usual liquid hand soap, dish soap, or even shampoo and body gel, the second type will whet your appetite. It’s suitable for any use scenario as you wish.

Second, for the motion sensor, it’s not the more responsive the better. In our test, the dispensers would easily dispense soap by accidental trigger. Even the clothes sliding beneath the detector could activate the machine and squirted out the liquid soap. That caused quite a lot of problems as we needed to clean the clothes, desk, or even the foaming soap on our phone.

Next, for some products, liquid will build up at the nozzle if you don’t use it for a long time. We found out that some soap dispensers make intermittent sound and then squirted just a small amount of soap if you don’t keep it busy for a long period. Only if you place your hand below the sensor two to three times can it work normally. We believe that the nozzle gets clogged. Thus, we don’t suggest you buy such products.

The last to be concerned is that the exclusive liquid soap of some soap dispensers is quite irritant. Since it is irreplaceable, the quality must be ensured to be premium and mild which is not hurtful to your hands. During testing, we found that some hand sanitizers will cause your skin tight or even dry after long-term use. You should also avoid getting such products.

Our pick for versatile uses

Our pick: SVAVO Universal Automatic Soap Dispenser

Our Pick

SVAVO Universal Automatic Soap Dispenser

The best automatic soap dispenser — affordable and multifunctional.

It can offer a wide selection of use scenarios. You can replace its liquid hand soap with even dish soap, shampoo, or shower gel.
AED 122.99 from DIGSHOPUS $24.98 from Amazon USCA $39.99 from Amazon CA£21.99 from Amazon UK Note: The price is based at the time of publishing.
Pros:
+Multiple usages+Adjustable liquid volume+Excellent water resistance+Enhanced battery protection
Cons:
-You need to open the lid before switching the on/off button.

If you want a multi-functional automatic soap dispenser, look no further than the SVAVO Universal Automatic Soap Dispenser. Coming with a minimalist pure white design, it looks exceptionally stylish and decent. The unit can meet all your needs of use scenarios. You can fill it with hand sanitizer, dish soap, or even shampoo and shower gel. Also, it’s one of the best performers in water resistance and durability among all our tested models.

Classy and neat design

SVAVO Universal Automatic Soap Dispenser packs a greatly-attractive appearance design, and the slightly polished surface makes it look more fashionable. Compared with other tested metal-shell soap dispensers, SVAVO is less likely to leave blurred fingerprints and more likely to keep itself clean and tidy.

The metal sufrcase will leave blurred fingerprints easily.

Offer multiple use scenarios

After emptying the exclusive hand liquid soap, you can top the dispenser up. That said, you can refill with the hand sanitizer you’re used to, even dish soap, shampoo, or shower gel.

Picture this, when you want to take up the dish soap bottle with your greasy hands to do the dishes, it’s impossible to keep the bottle from oil. Additionally, you still need to clean the mess after the dishes are done, which is not a pleasant thing and is easy to neglect. Luckily, Svavo automatic soap dispenser is the hero of hygiene. Just move your hand below the infrared sensor, the machine can automatically release the liquid onto your hand, which is a quick and decent hand-washing way.

Multiple usages.

Three volume adjustments

Besides the replaceable hand liquid soap, SVAVO Universal Automatic Soap Dispenser also has three volume settings. You can control the amount of soap it will give out by just pressing the on/off button, and there is flashing light telling you which setting you’re at now.

At the first setting, the machine will squirt 1.5mL of soap, which is suitable for kids or normal usage. The second setting will release 3ml of soap, which is ideal for adults or slightly-dirt hands. The third setting has quite large amount which is 4.5mL for massive filth hands. With these adjustments, you can adjust the soap amount based on your needs and use scenarios.

The light tells you which setting the soap dispenser is at now.

The excellent waterproof design makes it fearless to splash.

It had an excellent performance in our simulated water-resistance test, and survived from loads of splashes we poured on top, sides, and the infrared sensor. Moreover, the water didn’t soak into the battery slot which stayed dry. It still worked normally.

Double battery protection

The battery slot is installed on top of the dispenser, and it is protected by double covers. If you need to change the batteries, open the top lid first, and then unscrew the battery slot to take out the batteries. In addition, the slot is padded with silicone on top to keep it from water. Hence, you’re worry-free from a burnt circuit board due to water soak.

Double protection for batteries.

For many soap dispensers we tested, their battery slot is designed at the bottom. In general, water will spill all over the sink when you’re washing your face, which means heaps of water may build up at your sink. Thus, such a design may cause the bottom batteries soak in water, and the circuit board might probably become damaged as time goes by.

Furthermore, it’s very inconvenient to change the batteries if the battery slot is at the bottom. If you don’t slant the dispenser to replace, the batteries will fall on the ground. If you do slant the unit, the liquid soap will flow out. So, it’s lucky to spot Svavo soap dispenser which comes with a greatly reasonable design, leaving no troubles for you at all.

Two scents of liquid soap

The liquid soap of the dispenser is replaceable, but the unit still comes with a hand sanitizer which has a volume of 340ml that should be good for 60-day of family use. After our long-term review and usage, we found that the liquid soap won’t be harmful to your hands or cause tightness or dryness. It also offers two scents for your options including apple and lavender.

Flaws but not dealbreaker

SVAVO Universal Automatic Soap Dispenser comes with only one minor downside, however: the on/off button is hidden below the top lid. That means, you need to remove the lid first every time before you press the button or adjust the liquid volume, which might cause some inconvenience. But we think the 3ml of the second setting is usually enough for your routine use, so we don’t consider it a deal breaker.

Our pick for hand wash only

Our pick: Xiaomi Mijia Automatic Soap Dispenser

Our Pick

Xiaomi Mijia Automatic Soap Dispenser

Only for hand wash

The responsive sensing system can bring an easy and decent hand-washing experience to you. And the incredible water-resistant function ensures a long-term use.
AED 78.99 from DIGSHOP Note: The price is based at the time of publishing.
Pros:
+Responsive infrared sensor+Incredible water resistance+Minimalist and stylish design+Inexpensive
Cons:
-The liquid soap might flow out if you slant the dispenser.

If you just need an automatic soap dispenser beside a sink, Xiaomi Mijia Automatic Soap Dispenser is your best bet. It has both a nice look and useful functions. Featuring a compact, minimalist, and low-profile design, the dispenser can blend into any style of decoration. As a touchless automatic soap dispenser, it still creates the most hygienic effect on condition that it saves more time and water, offering you with premium and elegant hand-washing experience. No matter the infrared sensor or the water-resistant performance, it beats most of our tested products.

Fast-acting but not over-responsive automatic sensor

The sensing device is the most essential part for a touchless soap dispenser. Xiaomi Mijia Automatic Soap Dispenser uses infrared sensing technology, which is fast-dispensing that takes just 0.25 seconds to release the soap. Through our measurement, its sensing range is around 70mm. With that said, you don’t have to put your hand extremely close to the sensor to receive the soap.

Xiaomi automatic soap dispenser

Among our tested soap dispensers, the range of 70mm is a common distance. The sensitivity is almost the same. But some infrared sensors are over responsive. Imagine this, when you’re cleaning the sink water stain, you end up with soap all over your hands or even clothes just because you accidently slide under the sensor and trigger it. Annoying? Exactly!

The infrared sensor of Xiaomi automatic soap dispenser is near the nozzle. In fact, the spout can properly help avoid the accidental trigger of the sensor, but not hinder the normal use. Although the nozzle design cannot completely cut the trouble, it minimizes the chance of squirting soap when your hand moves beneath the infrared detector by chance.

Infrared sensing does not cause much inconvenience.

In all soap dispensers we tested, most of them can’t do that, including one competitor that is always compared with Xiaomi on many review sites. Its sensing range is just below the nozzle and it’s impeccable in sensing speed. The sensor is easily activated by your hand’s accidental move which makes it squeeze out soap. How mind distracting! And who will have to clean that up? Precisely.

Over-responsive infrared sensor.

Fearless to splash while cleaning

Whether the material or the design, Xiaomi Mijia Automatic Soap Dispenser acts incredibly in water resistance ability. Coming with an IPX4 waterproof rating, it won’t get damaged even you splash water on the unit. In our test, we put the dispenser near a sink and repeated to pour loads of water on it. Even we did so, it still kept intact.

Excellent waterproof ability provides long-lasting usage.

The power button is on top of the dispenser and it’s of a touch sensing technology. So, when there’s water on the button it will light up. But if it’s just a small amount of water, it will not be triggered. Plus, the button also features great water resistance, so you don’t need to worry it fails to work because of the spillage.

The hidden batteries get major protection.

The reason why the batteries can stay away from damage is because of their location. Among our tested soap dispensers, many battery slots are designed at the bottom. Generally, after washing your hands or face, some water will be left on the sink and even build up a puddle. If the battery slot is at the lowest level, it’s easy for liquid to get inside. Over time, the circuit board of the dispenser will burn out.

Luckily, the battery slot of Xiaomi soap dispenser is hidden inside the top unit which is above the soap chamber. That means, even water builds up on the sink, the batteries won’t get wet not to mention the circuit board get ruined.

The batteries are protected well.

Mild liquid soap but with strong cleaning effect

The included hand liquid soap comes with a great cleaning ability and is very mild and non-irritating. In our test, we used it multiple times a day and didn’t feel any tightness or dryness on hands.

Moreover, the dispenser offers two types of hand sanitizers with different functions for you to choose from, namely the antibacterial type and the amino acid type. Obviously, the antibacterial soap is more powerful and effective in inhibiting bacteria than ordinary one, while the amino acid type is gentler to your skin.

No worry about the leakage problem

For the tested foaming soap dispensers, a few foaming will leave at their spouts after use and will turn to liquid afterwards. If the liquid builds up, it will drip on the sink. Although Xiaomi soap dispenser has the same issue, the nozzle design makes less chances to leave the foaming at the spout. Thus, the soap leakage problem doesn’t happen to Xiaomi soap dispenser very often.

Low price tag

This soap dispenser takes the win in every way but it’s surprisingly cheap. Although you cannot replace its liquid soap with your own, packing a volume of 320mL is enough for over 400 times of use. Besides, it also launches a liquid soap set, which is more economical than buying separately. Hence, you don’t need to worry spending large money on liquid soap top ups at all.

Flaws but not dealbreaker

We have to mention that after you open the liquid soap bottle, if you slant the soap dispenser, the liquid might flow out. But this is a common problem for most soap dispensers we tested. Don’t worry. The volume of liquid soap it flows out is not that much so it doesn’t affect your daily use.

The Rivalry

Demacke: This soap dispenser sells for a low price and with bad quality. The battery slot is at the bottom and the circuit board wires are exposed outside, which looks cheap. We didn’t choose it even with such an attempting price.

ORENBO: This soap dispenser looks minimalist, but the quality is mediocre. It has a light hint when you press the power button. But not after a while, the light doesn’t always work normally. Also, the battery slot is at the bottom. We gave it up.

Xiaoji: This product is always compared with Xiaomi automatic soap dispenser by many review sites, so we had pretty high expectations to it when we bought it. However, after some time of use, we found that its hand sanitizer smells irritant and is slippery which is not easy to wash off. The machine is also relatively noisy while working and the price is quite expensive. So, we didn’t choose it.

Kenaipu: For this unit, the connection structure is not always solid when you use the buckle to assemble. If you pick up the dispenser, the liquid bottle is likely to fall down. So, we did not choose it either.

Papo: It looks similar to Xiaoji, but its infrared induction acts very slow. In our testing, it dispensed soap after we moved our hand out of the sensing range. And that happened many times.

Xiaoxiongqinuo: Its sensitivity is relatively fast. You can charge it without the need of batteries. However, the machine squirted out water without adding any hand sanitizer. And it looks very cheap, so we didn’t choose it.

NetEase: The design and the battery location are quite ideal and we thought it would be our pick at first. However, we found that the foam it gave out was not as smooth as Xiaomi, and came with big noise. More importantly, it had serious leakage problem. So, we weeded it out with no doubt.

Xiaowei: It has a similar design to Xiaoji, but it did not squirt out soap steadily, and was not fast-acting enough.

Svavo V-470: The top unit is made of metal which is easy to leave fingerprints and hard to clean. The battery slot is at the bottom which is easy to let water get in. So, it’s not our choice.

Lebath: We had a high expectation to this dispenser as it’s chargeable. But it’s quite noisy while using it. Also, it’s expensive. So, we didn’t pick it.

Yueke: It has a metal surface, which is also easy to attract fingerprints. The battery slot is at the bottom. When testing its water resistance ability, we found out that it was quite easy to let water get inside. Thus, it’s not our choice either.
